Local SEO Fundamentals
Being closer to the searcher doesn't always win.
Proximity is a real factor. It's also the most overrated one.
What proximity actually does
Google considers how close your business is to the searcher's location.
If a customer searches "tree service near me" from their driveway, businesses within a couple miles get a boost. Makes sense. Geographic relevance matters.
But strong signals beat short distance
A real-world comparison.
Business A
0.5 miles away. 12 reviews, 4.3 stars. GBP half-built. No website to speak of.
Business B
8 miles away. 140 reviews, 4.9 stars. Dialed GBP. Strong website with location pages covering the searcher's city.
Why this matters
You can outwork proximity.
A business across town with 10x the reviews and a properly built site beats the closer business in the map pack consistently. Owners who assume "I'm not local enough" use it as an excuse. The real answer is they're not strong enough.
The takeaway
Proximity is one factor. Reviews and content can overwhelm it.
Don't use distance as the reason. Use it as a baseline you can outwork.
