GBP Mastery
GBP categories decide what you rank for.
Get them wrong and the rest of your work doesn't matter.
How categories actually work
Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you're eligible for.
If your primary category is "Landscaper" but you're a tree service, you will not show up for tree service searches. Period. The category is the gate.
How to pick them
One primary, several secondary.
- 01
Primary = your single most valuable search
What's the search you'd most want to win? That's your primary.
- 02
Secondary = related services
Add every related category Google offers. Each one is another search you're eligible for.
- 03
Don't stuff
Categories Google offers for your industry, not random ones. Mismatch can trigger suspension.
- 04
Revisit quarterly
Google adds new categories. Some are gold. Tree Service got broken into sub-categories not long ago.
The trap
Owners pick the obvious primary and stop there.
A pressure washing company picks "Pressure Washing Service" and calls it done. But "House Washing" and "Power Washing Service" and "Cleaning Service" are also valid secondaries that put them in more searches. Most owners leave 80% of their category reach on the table.
The takeaway
Pick the primary carefully. Stack the secondaries aggressively.
It's the single highest-leverage 20 minutes of GBP work you'll do.
